Healthy Breakfast recipe | Gujrati dish Handvo | Millet Episode | Let’s make this tasty and healthy Gujrat recipe Handvo. Handvo is a very popular breakfast recipe made with rice, dal, and some vegetables. But you can also make this for tiffin box or for evening snack.

But today, I am using a kodo millet in place of rice. Don’t worry, if you do not want to use kodo millet, you can use rice instead of millet, and the taste doesn’t change.

For Handvo, you only need some common ingredients that are easily available in everyone’s house. And serve this with some ketchup or any spicy Chutney. Let’s start the recipe…

Hearty Breakfast Recipes

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 bowl kodo millet/idli rice(use any bowl for measuring the rice and dal, but it should be same)
  • 1 bowl all lentils (2 to 3 tbsp arhar dal(pigeon pea/split toor dal), 3 to 4 tbsp chana dal(split chickpeas lentil), 3 to 4 tbsp urad dal(black gram)
  • 1 and a half tbsp salt
  • 3 to 4 tbsp curd
  • 2 tbsp crushed ginger,garlic and green chilies
  • 1 medium sized chopped onions
  • 2 to 3 small sized grated potatoes
  • 1 tbsp coriander powder
  • 1 tbsp cumin powder
  • 1 to 2 tbsp red chili powder
  • 1 tbsp amchur powder
  • 1/2 tbsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tbsp baking soda
  • for tempering( sesame seeds, cumin seeds, black mustard seeds, hing,curry leaves, mustard oil 3 to 4 tbsp)

Handvo Recipe for breakfast

Take a bowl. Add 1 bowl kodo millet. Here, I used kodo millet. You can use normal idli rice instead of millet. Because traditionally, handvo is made with rice. Now, add 1 bowl lentils(all of the lentils).

So here, take the same bowl and add all of the lentils in that. Make sure the ratio of rice and dal has to be 1:1. 1 bowl rice and 1 bowl mixed lentils. Add water and soak it for 3 to 4 hours. Then, add the soaked rice/millet and lentils in a grinder.

Pour some water and grind it in a smooth paste. The mixture should be flowing but not too thin. It should be just like idli batter. Now, cover it and leave it to ferment overnight. You can store this fermented batter in the fridge for 2 to 3 days. And whenever you want to make them, just take some batter in another bowl and mix other ingredient and make them.

Now add salt, curd. Mix well.

Then add crushed chilies, garlic, and ginger. Add chopped onions, grated potatoes, and other powdered spices.

Mix well. Finally, add some baking soda and mix well.

Now, take a plate, add sesame seeds, cumin seeds, rai(black mustard seeds),hing, and curry leaves.

Heat some mustard oil. Then add tempering. Turn the flame on low. Add 2 to 3 ladle of handvo batter and spread it well.

Now cover it and cook it for 5 to 7 minutes on low flame. Then flip the hndvo and cook it from the other side. When it turns golden in color, remove it from the heat. Handvo is ready. Cut them into slices and enjoy them.
